The first precept for a Buddhist is to refrain from killing. Does this mean that all Buddhists have to be vegetarians, as some believe? Today’s Dhammapada verse refers to the occasion when the Buddha was asked to impose five additional rules for monastics, among them was that they had to be vegetarians. However, the Buddha declined. Why? What is the Buddha’s wisdom in his approach to this issue?
