When one is afflicted by painful feelings because of sickness, how can one overcome the suffering to become cool in the heart? In the Dutiyagelaññasutta, the Buddha visited the monks in the sick ward and gave a discourse that centres on the Four Noble Truths and Dependent Origination.

One of the most important links in the Dependent Origination is that between feelings and craving. Our emotions and feelings affect our thinking, speech and actions. In daily life, most people are either carried away by their feelings or they try to suppress them. Though this discourse was given to sick monks, it is equally applicable to us. Listen to Bhante’s explanation of the Buddha’s teachings on dealing with pleasant, painful or neutral feelings when they arise. They are the three steps in the practice of mindful observation that will reduce our underlying tendencies to lust, aversion and ignorance.
