In this Sutta, King Pasenadi of Kosala, a dedicated follower of the Dhamma, realises during his mindful contemplation that while the Dhamma is beautifully explained by the Buddha, it is best suited for those with good spiritual friends (Kalyāṇamitta). The Buddha fully agrees with the King’s insight, recalling a time when he explained to the Venerable Ānanda that Kalyāṇamitta encompasses the entirety of the holy life. Without these noble friendships, both spiritual growth and ultimate enlightenment are impossible. But why is this the case, and how exactly does the Buddha define a true spiritual friend?
Additionally, in the same Sutta, the Buddha mentions that ‘lofty riches’ can be attained through diligence. What are these riches, and what are the three types of happiness that one can achieve? To find out, please listen to Bhante’s enlightening talk.
