In this Sutta, the Buddha reprimanded a group of monks for their casual gossip as they were comparing the wealth, strength, power, etc. between King Bimbisara and King Pasenadi. He advised them to mind their own business, as such frivolous talk does not lead to happiness, and instead reminded them of the two things they ought to do – talk about the Dhamma or maintain noble silence.
Is leading a monastic life that restrictive? Not at all. Instead of discussing the Dhamma and religious matters all the time, monastics are given the freedom to keep themselves updated on current affairs. This enables the monastics to provide proper guidance and advice to devotees during consultations, in conformity with the Dhamma. Given that the goal of a monastic is to perfect the Path, the prime focus is expected to be on Dhamma discussions. Otherwise, the preference is to maintain noble silence. So, what exactly is noble silence? Is there a difference between noble silence and just keeping complete silent? Can our minds keep calm and quiet completely? Be surprised that while remaining silent, one’s mind can still create unwholesome actions and thoughts. Do tune in to this interesting talk and be amazed by the information.
