Offering of food to the community of monastics is a meritorious act which helps us to cultivate generosity. In the Suppavāsā Sutta, after receiving a meal hosted by the Koliyan princess and female noble disciple Suppavāsā, the Buddha tells Suppavāsā the four benefits she receives when she gives food. What are these four benefits? They are: life (ayu), beauty (vanno), happiness (sukham) and strength (balam). How does giving food result in these four benefits? In what manner and what mindset should one have when making food offerings?
